List the essential and important Objectives in chronological/sequential order on your Class/Course map (column 3) so that it outlines a logical instructional progression.
Refer to the NDE Math Concepts to determine adequate and appropriate coverage of the broad concepts; then review the current Nebraska Math Standards for more detail. Enter the Standard Indicators in column 4 that correlate with the Objectives.
Consult with those whose grade level/course precede and follow your classroom.
On the first day of school next fall, what knowledge-based skill set do you want your incoming group of students to have before they walk into your classroom? Do the Objectives identified for the grade level/course that precedes your grade level/course adequately prepare students to be successful in your classroom? If not, discuss with members of that group and arrive at consensus.
Likewise, do the Objectives identified for your classroom adequately prepare students to be successful for the next grade level/course? Share your list of Objectives with that group and arrive at consensus.
Have you identified any gaps, overlaps, or redundancies? If so, address them now.
After looking up and down, can you determine that the curriculum spirals? Does it build from one grade level/course to the next?
Identify the Unit (column 2) that corresponds with either a textbook chapter or a supplemental unit.
How many Days (class sessions) are needed to prepare students for mastery of each Objective? Include this number in column 5. Is the total number of Days less than the total number of student days for the year (approximately 170)? You may want to refer to your Lesson Plans as a guide.
What Vocabulary terms are associated with each Objective? Are these terms used consistently throughout the K-12 curriculum to promote familiarity and understanding as students progress through the math sequence? Include essential/important terminology in column 6. Please refer to the Marzano Research Library Vocabulary List for K-12 Math to guide you.
